What is Silicon Image's principal business?

Silicon Image develops, promotes and sells solutions that enable the secure distribution, presentation and storage of high-definition (HD) content. The company offers robust, high-bandwidth semiconductors in the consumer electronics (CE), personal computer (PC) and storage arenas based on its innovative digital interconnect technology. Silicon Image creates and drives industry standards for digital content delivery such as Digital Visual Interface (DVI), High-Definition Multimedia Interface® (HDMI®), Unified Display Interface (UDI) and Serial Advanced Technology Attachment (SATA). Silicon Image broadens market adoption of these interfaces by working with other companies and industry groups. Silicon Image also licenses its intellectual property (IP) cores to companies providing advanced system-on-a-chip (SoC) solutions.

How does Silicon Image make money?

Silicon Images derives its revenue from two primary sources: sales of integrated circuits (or chips) and licensing its intellectual property to other companies. Licensing revenue sources include IP cores, testing fees, as well as HDMI licensing and royalties paid for the use of our technologies. Silicon Image products are primarily focused on consumer applications and address three major markets:

In the CE space, our HDMI products provide essential functionality for high-definition source or receiver devices such as Blu-ray Disc™ players, Set-Top-Boxes and HD display devices including LCD, DLP, and plasma Digital TVs, . Our port processors featuring Silicon Image InstaPort™ technology for fast port switching, are targeted for the DTV market. Silicon Image low-power HDMI transmitters are optimized for the mobile CE market.

Our products are also employed in the PC arena, providing DVI and HDMI functionality to motherboards, netbooks, and graphics cards, as well as desktop display devices such as LCD monitors.

In the storage market, our SteelVine® product line includes RAIDs, RAID chips, and host controllers.

Who are Silicon Image's principal customers?

We sell our products directly to Original Equipment Manufacturers and Value Added Resellers and through distributors. Our roster of end-customers includes "who's-who" of global electronics manufacturers, including Apple, Dell, Hitachi, LG, HP, Matsushita (Panasonic), Philips, Samsung, Sony, Thomson, Toshiba, and many others.

Where does Silicon Image manufacture its products?

Silicon Image is a fabless semiconductor company, meaning that the company does not own or operate a semiconductor fabrication facility. Our semiconductor raw materials are manufactured by third party contractors using cost-effective complementary metal-oxide semiconductor (CMOS) processes, principally Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company for wafer fabrication. In the assembly, testing and packaging areas, we outsource to Amkor Technology in Korea, Advanced Semiconductor Engineering in Taiwan, Malaysia, and the U.S., and Fujitsu and Kawasaki in Japan. Our independent foundries, assembly and test subcontractors have all achieved ISO 9001 certification.

Silicon Image became a public company in 1999. The initial public offering (IPO) price on October 6, 1999 was $12.00 per share. Silicon Image announced a two-for-one stock split on July 17, 2000. The record date for the stock split was July 28, 2000. The IPO price adjusted for the stock split is $6.00 per share.
